CENTERED AND ADJUSTED

Locate Your Center, and Relate to Your Circumference

While there is no “perfect” or ideal posture that suits everyone, many of us develop postural habits which affect how well we move and feel in our bodies. Our posture is often a reflection of our lifestyle, how we feel, and how well we have recovered injuries, both physically and emotionally.

In this workshop we will explore ways of centering ourselves within the context of various yoga postures as a means of reclaiming our physical abilities and balancing our efforts. We will learn to set up postures in such a way that we can use our bones and our muscles to create leverage, control and deepen the intensity of a posture, and develop the very useful skill of being able to self adjust.

This class is designed to be an accessible, practical, and useful for anyone who would like to gain more control and freedom within their bodies.

HANDSTANDS, HANDSTANDS, AND ALSO HANDSTANDS

Transcend the Fear and Discover the Joy of Handstands!

Learn how to begin a handstand practice as well as techniques and tools to improve your existing one.

I will teach you the alignment and strength that makes handstands easier to progress with and a great addition to a yoga or fitness routine. We will use a variety of exercises to build wrist strength, scapula control, upper back mobility, pelvic coordination, and so forth with floor and wall techniques.

Beginners are are welcome and anyone else who is interested in gaining insight into how they might train their handstand.

UPPER BODY FORMULA

You don’t have to choose between strength, fluidity, and range of motion.

Develop a strong and mobile upper body with exercises and movement patterns that will enhance and diversify your own practice and teaching. It is a false assumption that building muscle and strength diminishes flexibility and suppleness. Strength trained with a full range of motion actually enhances these qualities, enabling you to make use of your flexibility in practical situations; while minimizing the risk of injuries.

Building strength through multiple planes of motion helps you gain control over all of your moving parts, and builds movement competence and confidence.

LOWER BODY FORMULA

Develop a reliably stable and dynamic lower body and strong mobile back with body weight exercises and movement patterns.

Flexibility plus strength means more control and confidence in your abilities. Explore a range of bi lateral and unilateral exercises and movements that build strength and flexibility at the same time, and require less maintenance than doing either alone.

Leave with a bounce in your step and a better understanding of how to use body weight exercises to build strong and resilient legs. This class can help with regaining strength after injuries, as well as enhancing general awareness and control.

20 HOUR INTENSIVES

THE ART OF SEQUENCING & CUEING A VINYASA YOGA CLASS
20 Hours

This in-depth training is most suitable for yoga teachers and experienced practitioners. It is designed to set you apart as a teacher, to provide you with endless practice insights, and to refresh your experience of yoga overall. Expect to become more proficient in your practice and to enable the same for your students, to renew your enthusiasm for learning, and to make a thoughtful contribution to the tradition of Vinyasa Yoga!

During this immersion we will address:

·      Precise yet simple verbal cues.

·      Intentional postural adjustments.

·      A methodical approach to sequencing postures for group classes, and for private settings.

·      How to sequence postures in deliberate order, taking into account how one posture complements or continues from another.

·      How to proof your own postures, as well as your students’ postures, developing an eye for their integrity and potentiation.

·      How to give students the necessary information to assemble an integrated posture.

·      Evaluating when a gentle physical adjustment is more efficient than a verbal cue.

·      Discerning when a student’s intuitive approach is more appropriate than your own.

While these topics will be the main focus, there will be ample room to address the ones you bring. Each morning will begin with a led-practice, followed by discussion and hands-on learning of the skills discussed. Bring your curiosity and be prepared to fully participate in this interactive learning experience!

Certification

All students who attend all 20 hours of the intensive, will receive a certificate of completion. Students already certified to teach yoga through the Yoga Alliance may obtain continuing education credits with their certificate. Students pursuing a Katonah Yoga Certification may also receive credit with their certificate.

GEOMETRY OF YOGA: POSTURAL ADJUSTMENTS & SELF-PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT
20 Hours Intensives

The Geometry of Yoga 30 Hour Intensive is a continuing education course for experienced practitioners and yoga teachers.
Nothing can replace the compassionate heart and touch of a yoga teacher with a dynamic, adaptive, and artful method of teaching. After completing this intensive, expect to see your students with new eyes, perceive them with clarity and wisdom, and adjust them with confident hands.

Objectives:

-Transcend yoga brands and styles by sharpening your eye for detail and symmetry.

-Engage your students by describing the relationship between physical posture, mental disposition and spiritual development by increasing your own “wholeistic” understanding of yoga practice.

-Increase your ability to describe form and technique simply yet accurately to individuals and groups of students.

-Elevate your understanding of alignment as something much more natural than straightening limbs and spreading fingers and toes. Learn the relationships between the parts that make up an integrated whole human being.

-Develop your intuitive awareness of your own postural pattern and ways of thinking. This above all will transform your practice and your teaching into something authentic and potent.

All four days will start with one hour of led practice, followed by one hour of assisted self-practice, and then a group discussion. The afternoon sessions will focus on postural adjustments. Expect to learn how to articulate postural adjustments as well as how to physically alter postures. David will choose a set of postures each day, and demonstrate adjustments on a few different body types. You will also break up into pairs to adjust one another, switching partners a few times so that you have a chance to work with different body types.
